Best of 2011

Since I spend the majority of my day sitting in a chair and using a computer, I wanted to share the best things the internet has to offer, for someone of my bent.

>Best phone
Jailbroken iPhone 4.
Most people think the iPhone is the best phone ever, which I agree, but it is so much better when its jailbroken. Similar to my mac, I can now add all sorts of functionality to my workflow, thanks to Redsn0w for the work.

>Best hamburger
Hands down, SmashBurger. I have only been to the one in Dallas on Mockingbird in Uptown, but dang, the BBQ and bacon combo helped my gain 15 pounds, in my “eat everywhere good in Dallas before I quit my job” adventure.

>Best new thing to eat
Fried pickles or sushi. Thanks again to Smashburger.

>Most exciting accomplishment
Remodeling a foreclosure in 3 months with the help of my friends… and saving $35k in the process.

>Best new music (for me)
Very, very, very strange, but electronica. It started with RJD2 and then Skrillex, which I found from watching GoPro videos. Which leads me to my next point. —>Trip Lee‘s new album.

>Best new gadget
GoPro Hero2. Very cool! Just in case you have never heard of them and want to wish you led someone else’s life, check out this link. If I ever wanted to quit my job and be an adrenaline junkie, it was from these videos.

>Best online discovery
Freddiew’s youTube channel. This guy single handedly ruined my productivity at work over the last 6 months. Yet made me wish I had a buddy to make videos with everyday too.

>Best piece of software
Pluraleyes. Syncs audio and video assets really easily and does it really well.

>Best new Browser
Sorry Safari, Google Chrome just beat you out, because you’re not compatible with everything.

>Best Cloud Service
Toss up between, iCloud (only because it automatically backsup your iPhone, and DropBox.

>Biggest Switchup
Moving from OSX Mail to Microsoft Outlook. No one could open up my attachments when I sent them with Mail.

>Biggest Switchup in 2012
Moving from Final Cut Pro to Premiere. Apple, you make wonderful products, and operating systems, but your software just stinks, Motion and Aperture are lousy.

>Best OSX shortcut
Shift + CTRL + CMD + 4 = screen capture selection copied to clipboard. I was just draggin and droppin from the desktop anyway.

>Best online service.
The heck with facebook. Twitter is where its at. I finally got over the hump of “Twitter is stupid, who cares what you’re eating for lunch”. The great thing about Twitter is you can connect to the people who you would never get a chance to otherwise in a semi-personal way. Check out @RealRonHoward. He shares a lot of what he is doing in preparation and production of his movies.

>Best to follow on Twitter
WITHOUT A DOUBT. @ghettohikes. A little crude, but always funny. Check it out and make sure you understand the context.

>Best movie
The Help.

>Worst Movie
Real Steel. Im not even going to make a link

>Worst Song
That country rap song. Jason Aldean’s remake of Colt Ford – Dirt Road Anthem. Maybe its because when I was working on my house it played twice an hour.

>Best Experience (work related)
Praying for a long time for a new job and then landing a really awesome one at Sabre.

>Best Experience
Wrestling with my 1.5 year old son, who now growls at every animal.

>Best thing to add to your mac
OSX 10.7. Not quite as cool as the change from 10.4 to 10.5 but, still good and a lot better than I thought it would be. There are so many mac haters.

>Best realization
Money isn’t going to make you happy, but it might just make you upset. Its not the end all to life and it fixes nothing, so why pursue it. Pursue your passion and make it greater.

>Most anticipated of 2012
RED digital cinema’s new “Dragon” sensor for the RED Epic. I hope its a game changer.

>Most education in 2012
NAB 2012, or REDucation. Here’s to hoping I can attend both.

>Best person to learn from (besides Jesus)
Vincent LaForet, but I feel like he is becoming a little cynical and hasn’t really done much in terms of movie making.

>Best thing learned from Jesus
His coming is more than promised, its eminent.
